FILTER EFFICIENCY VS SYSTEM EFFICIENCY
Many air cleaner manufactures make very big efficiency and performance claims in their product literature. Unfortunately, these claims rarely reflect the actual performance of the air cleaners, but rather refer to the theoretical performance. For example, many manufacturers claim to use a filter with an efficiency of 99.97% at 0.3microns. To the consumer this suggests that the air cleaner will actually remove 99.97% of particles from the air that flows through the air cleaner. However, in fact many air cleaners using True HEPA-filters do not even reach 50% actual filtration efficiency (mostly because the filters are not sealed properly within the housing). This performance lie can easily be detected with a laser particle counter such as our ParticleScan Pro instrument.
FAN AIR HANDLING CAPACITY VS AIR DELIVERY RATE
A further performance parameter which is overstated by most air cleaner manufacturers, is the air delivery. Big claims are made in order to deceive the consumer with regard to the suitability of the air cleaner for larger rooms. To mislead the customer many manufacturers state the theoretical fan air handling capacity for their air cleaner without filters installed, but not the actual air delivery rate with all filter in place.
